MCGS General Meeting

  • September 28, 2011
  • 7:00 PM - 9:59 PM
  • Marin Family History Center, 220 North San Pedro Rd., San Rafael

Presentation: Annual Workshop

There will be three different workshops where members choose from among three different topics. We will break into instruction / discussion groups. You will be able to attend the Beginner's Class, which will last the entire evening, or you can attend the other two programs, each of which will last half the evening and be given twice.

This is generally one of the most popular meetings of the year. Bring your friends who may be thinking about taking the plunge and searching for their ancestors, or those whose feet are already wet and want some new ideas.

BEGINNERS CLASS

Beginning genealogy and family history starts with each of us. Come start your genealogy, learn the basics of how and where to search for your ancestors, follow procedures, and get some tips - including free resources for your use. Taught by veteran genealogist Jeffrey Vaillant, who specializes in Civil War Genealogy. Handouts will also help beginners get started.

SORT YOUR STORY

Led by Lorel Kapke, creator of Genealogy Organizing Made Easy software, you will learn about this great companion product for Reunion, Family Tree Maker, Legacy and many more Genealogy programs. It is designed to organize the genealogist while it creates an easy to use product using your documents, pictures and stories that non-genealogists will appreciate and treasure. Lorel has created online videos and tutorials that ensure your success. She is the Program Chairperson for Sonoma County Genealogical Society.

THE MANY BENEFITS OF ATTENDING  GENEALOGICAL CONFERENCES

Led by long time member and genealogist Phyllis Garratt, this workshop will be targeted to all levels of expertise - beginners to the more experienced. The purpose is to show how broad the genealogical world is...and to increase your knowledge and skills. She will provide a helpful handout to remind you of all you have learned.

About our Meetings:

The Genealogical Society General meetings are open to the public, with no admission fee. Feel free to drop in! Bring your friends as everyone is welcome. Come early and ask your burning genealogical questions of other members before the meeting.

We meet on the 4th Wednesday of every month, with a couple of exceptions. November's meeting is held on the 3rd Wednesday, due to Thanksgiving. There is no general meeting in May, due to our Annual Picnic, nor in December, due to the holidays and our Winter Holiday Party.

Annually, several of our regularly scheduled meetings have a certain focus: April, we hold our Annual General Meeting and Elections (but there's usually a presentation also); May of each year we hold an Anniversary Celebration or Annual Picnic; and in September, we have a workshop.
