Presentation from March 21, 2009 CIG Meeting - Beginning Computer Genealogy by John Klingel.

If you are interested in family history and genealogy, this session will help you get started by introducing you to data that can be found on the internet. You don't have to be a computer expert or even own a computer. Local libraries and Family History Centers can provide free access.

The internet is a rich source of info. Discover your ancestors, meet relatives you didn't know you had, find what ships brought them to America (and see pictures of the actual ships), and trace your ancestors back to their native countries. And these are only a few of the things you can do on the internet. We'll introduce you to the best internet sites and show you how to search for information. You'll find how easy it is to trace ancestors and discover the fun and excitement of uncovering your roots.

This is John's presentation in Adobe Reader file format (pdf).*

October 16, 2008 Handout from TMG October 26, 2008 TMG Meeting - Genealogy Research Process - This comes from Mark Tucker's ThinkGenealogy blog (www.thinkgenealogy.com) that discusses a visual map of the genealogy research process.  This is Mark's visualization of concepts from the Board for Certification of Genealogists and Elizabeth Shown Mills.

I've used this for a couple of months to help me with my research and I've found it to be of great value.  I think it's one of the best visual aides to come along in some time for genealogy researchers.  It puts a very complex topic into easy to read and understand visual form.

To read the entire article and to download the Genealogy Research Process, version 2, go to --> http://www.thinkgenealogy.com/2008/07/31/genealogy-research-process-map-version-2/.  This is a large file to download (9.5 mb) so I suggest that you only download the file if you have a high speed broadband Internet connection.

Handout from CIG September 18, 2008 Meeting - Genealogy Social Networking Websites.  I created a list and short description of some of the social networking websites now available for genealogist.

Click here to open the handout and it will open an Adobe Reader file (pdf).

June 21, 2008 Handout from June 21, 2008 CIG Meeting - Organizational Outline - This is an outline of how to organize your paper files, pictures, documents, etc. that you collect while doing your genealogy research.

You'll notice that the outline uses a little different numbering sequence for each document type than what I explained at our CIG meeting today.  I use the date I received the document and then the number in sequence that I received it that day.  Both methods work well.

I've found this system to be very helpful in organizing my documents, pictures, maps, etc. and helps me to keep them so I can find them again when needed.

Click here to open the handout and it will open an Adobe Reader file (pdf).
