Family History Contest

The Family History Writing Contest is a contest for Marin County Students developed by the Marin County Genealogical Society in conjunction with the Marin County Office of Education in the Fall of 2001. At that time, the Marin County Board of Supervisors had just declared October "Marin County Family History Month" to coincide with a US Senate measure creating "Family History Month" in October as a National Celebration. The contest was intended and has proved to entice students to interview family members and learn about their own cultural heritage. In a diverse county like Marin, celebrating differences is an important part of an educational approach that teaches tolerance. Sharing family stories in a classroom setting also does wonders for student self-esteem and helps every child know their story is special!
