Family History Contest DetailsNote: The letter below is sent to students in Marin County. It has been edited for our website. It is published here as a reference. 2007 Dear Student and Parent, October is Family History Month. For the seventh year the Marin County Genealogical Society will be celebrating Family History Month by sponsoring an essay contest for students in grades 3 to 8 designed to encourage students living in Marin County to learn about a living family member or an ancestor from the past, and to write a story about that person. The essay sent to the Society is judged with others in the same grade category. The winning essays are then presented to the Society and family members at a meeting held in January, 2008. We hope that you will take the time to learn about an older member of your family or an ancestor, telling the story of his or her life, and how that person fits into your family. You can learn where that person was born and grew up, about his or her education, and about other stories of interest to you. By sharing what you learn with not only your family members, but with the Marin County Genealogical Society and the public, you help preserve part of your family’s history. We also hope that you will continue to learn more about other members of your family. More information about the contest can be found at www.MarinGenSoc.org. At this site you can print the following:
Your entry can be in pencil, ink, or done on a computer. A parent may help with this, but the work must be in your own words. At the end of the essay you should include in the essay the source of the information used for the story (who you interviewed, name of book used, website, etc.), and you are encouraged to include properly labeled photographs (photocopies preferred), and other artwork related to your story. We encourage you to include the Family Group Sheet and Pedigree Chart, and you will receive more points if you do so. In fact, you will receive more points for being creative with the whole entry. The grade categories are as follows: Grades 3-5, and Grades 6-8. Prizes will be given for the First, Second and Third place winners in each grade category. All essays will also be published in the Kin Tracer. Each winner will be an honorary member of the Society for one year. Please send your essay, along with the signed Title Page (required) and other items to:
The deadline for entries is Friday, November 30, 2007. Winners will be notified after the judging process has been completed. An invitation is then sent out to the winners and their teachers with information about the Awards Ceremony on Wednesday, Wednesday, January 23, 2008. Winners will also be asked to send a school photo so that it may be used by the newspapers when the essays are published. Please note that independent entries, not sent by your teacher, will be accepted, although information about your school must be included in the Title Page. As stated above, only the winning essays will be printed in the newspapers…the confidential information from Family Group Sheets and Pedigree Charts will only be used by the judges for scoring purposes. We recommend that you make a copy of your entry in case of loss or damage. We make every effort to return the entries to each student at the end of the contest process. We hope that you will enter our contest. If you have entered before you are welcome to enter again with a new subject of your essay. We would love to hear from all of you. If you have questions or need help with your research, please phone either of us and we will try to be available.
